FROM Season 1 Ep 7: All Good Things Recap/Review
Let’s see if FROM can keep the momentum going from the previous episode. We’ve got lots to cover in this show as we head toward a catalyst of some kind. We’re jumping right into episode 7, “All Good Things!”
We begin the episode with a party getting ready to go down over at the Colony House, or the “cult-house,” as I call it. A banner is hung in the living room. It says, “Congratulations Fatime.”
Ellis looks on, drinking from a flash. We need to talk about Ellis, one of the worst characters on the show, because there’s so little development with the character and I’m not sure what to say about him, other than he’s just flat and forced. Also, how old is he? He acts like he’s a jaded teenager but I think he’s older than that.
Julie and Fatima are having a conversation. It sounds like they’re celebrating Fatima’s anniversary for when she arrived in The Town™. Fatima tells Julie it’s sometimes nice just to throw a party. Yeah, ok, Fatima. (I’ll try to keep the snark low but I can’t promise it if we’re going to be getting a lot of stupid comments the likes of Ellis and Fatima).
Does Julie have a crush on Fatima? I think she does. I ship them.
Fatima grabs a yellow sweater from underneath her bed and tells Julie that Trudy loves the sweater and that it’s Ellis’s favorite. (Trudy is the young woman that wanted to sleep with Jade when he first arrived in The Town.)
Why is she mentioning Trudy? I’m suspicious of this seemingly throw away comment. Don’t introduce a gun in the first act if you’re not going to use it in the third. Also, is Trudy a thief? Didn’t she steal Julie’s sweater in a previous episode?
Julie tells Fatima she’s really special for making the town seem normal. Yep, she’s definitely crushing on Fatima. And another Trudy reference. Somethings amiss!
Ellis shows up to call the girls away from their flirtation and to go get loaded up on booze. The girls decline and he exits stage left. Fatima says Ellis is struggling, before handing Julie a dress that will “make her look really cute.” Aww.
Down in the kitchen, Ellis is bothering Victor (the quiet and strange older guy that has been in the town since he was a kid). Why are we getting so much Ellis all of a sudden? I don’t like this. Donna comes downstairs to tell Victor that they’re all out of peaches. Victor states that the peach abundance is the one thing that’s never changed in all the years he’s been there.
Kevin, the character from the last episode that is leaving the flowers out for monster girl, is on the porch, leaving more flowers. At least they gave him a name now.
It’s about to get dark!
After the credit sequence, we get a nice bird’s eye view of The Town, starting with The Diner. I always love those shots. The show does a nice job of creating atmosphere with shots like this.
Boyd is ringing a bell as he walks down main street, letting everyone know that dusk is upon them. For Whom The Bell Tolls. The next shot is of Father Khatri. Foreshadowing?
Tabitha is on the couch, reading a bed time story to Ethan about the Cromenockle (still haven’t figured out who/what that is). “...That her adventures in this strange new world had truly only just begun.” And Ethan’s asleep.
Kenny knocks on Jade’s door, telling him that Kenny’s mom is ready with dinner. Is Jade staying at Kenny’s place? Guess so. Jade’s drawing weird symbols in Kenny’s book.
Father Khatri is waiting for Boyd and wants to talk to him inside the sheriff’s office. Khatri notices all of Boyd’s gear and they realize they’ve got a lot to talk about, as Boyd plans on going into the woods for answers.
Before they can start answering each other’s questions, though, we cut to Jim, whose making drawings of his own as Tabitha looks on. They’re drawings of radio tower plans. They have a conversation about Julie and safety. Tabitha is concerned. Jim mentions how Donna, the mother hen over there in Colony House, isn’t stupid. We’re definitely heading toward something going down over there!
Jim wants to use materials to build his radio towers over at the cult-house, also known as the Colony House. They need Donna’s permission. I’m assuming they’re going to get it. They need to build the towers at the highest grounds, which is at the Colony House, Jim tells Tabitha.
Back at the Colony House, we see Ellis stumbling around as the party is heating up. Fatima is worried about him. Getting some dysfunctional abuser vibes from Ellis now. Not digging his character at all.
Donna holds a drunken toast, in honor of Fatima’s one-year anniversary in The Town. They all love her, Donna says, because she’s a spark of joy. And she’s got good weed, apparently. Donna gives Fatima a present. It’s a dream catcher.
After her toast, everyone goes back to partying, and a random character comes up to Fatima to congratulate her on her year in The Town. They exchange a romantic kiss as Julie looks on. Anytime this show introduces a random character, you know it’s just a set up for something larger. I guess this means Fatima and Julie won’t be getting it on. Not in this episode, at least. Not sure why the show is stalling on that front. The characters have good chemistry and the relationship makes sense. Maybe they’re just introducing some doubt into Julie’s character. Does she identify as gay or is she struggling in that department?
Boyd is with Father Khatri, finishing up telling the man his plans, those of which the audience is not privy to. We know it involves Boyd going out into the forest and that’s about it. Khatri goes into long detail about an abused kid that he feels he let down. Instead of helping the boy out of the situation, he gives him a candy bar. The boy later dies by his abuser’s hand, and Khatri, out of grief, took the candy bar back from the boy’s body before kicking the crap out of the abuser. Khatri then freaked out and, two hours after the incident, found himself at The Town. Good times.
Khatri tells Boyd all about his buried bag and how Sara knew about the candy bar. He divulges that he’s been keeping Sara hostage because he thinks Sara can help them escape The Town. Boyd isn’t happy about that, but it sounds like he understands Khatri’s reasons for doing so, once Khatri tells him about how the voices talking to Sara might be able to help them find a way back home.
We’re back at the party with our new friend Kevin. What’s he doing opening the blinds to the window?! Well, it looks like he’s got a new girlfriend. He calls her Jasmine. She’s one of the monsters and the one that he’s been leaving flowers for.
She wants inside and threatens to leave Kevin if he doesn’t let her inside. She’s lonely but doesn’t want to be with Kevin if they can’t touch each other. Don’t do it, Kevin! But he will, because that’s what this episode has been building up to. Before she walks away from the window “for good”, Kevin The Idiot decides to open up the window to let her in. Dude was desperate for love, I guess. Hey, we’ve all been there! Of course, most of us aren’t dating murderous vixens. Most of us.
Downstairs, a random bald guy is talking about string theory. Ellis wants him to shut up and begins to start shit, completing his abusive tendencies. Donna and Fatima rescue baldy as Ellis goes upstairs to cool off. The bald guy remarks “like mother like son,” and Donna slugs him. Not sure what’s going on here but I assume the show will, eventually, get to the point. Donna walks away and the scene is over before it really began. Who the hell edits this show?
Back upstairs, Kevin lets Jasmine inside. Bad idea. They start making out and Jasmine bites his tongue off before slaughtering him. Goodbye, Kevin The Idiot. Nice knowing you.
Jade is sulking inside Kenny’s place when Kenny’s mom barges in and yells at him that dinner is ready. What show are we watching now? It’s like a bad sitcom.
Before we gain any traction in that department, we’re back at the party again. Fatima finds Trudy (also sulking) upstairs and they have a conversation about whether Fatima likes Trudy. Fatima is wearing the yellow sweater from earlier in the episode, when she told Julie how much Trudy loves it. Trudy remarks that it’s a nice party and, after Fatima states that Trudy will get one of her own, Trudy says, “No. I don’t think I will.” If this isn’t setting up Trudy’s death very soon, then I don’t know my telegraphed television manuscripts. She asks Trudy to take off her shirt before giving her the yellow sweater. Yep. She’s about to die!
Trudy walks off to “find something to give to (Fatima) too” and Julie enters the scene. She’s got a question. She wants to know about the girl that Fatima kissed earlier at the part. She’s confused because she thought Fatima was with Ellis. Fatima explains she was just “fooling around.” Julie finally musters up the courage to ask her a question. “Could I kiss you?” she asks, tentatively. I knew it! Ship them!
But Fatima rejects her. Julie, embarrassed, runs away. Ugh. This show.
Back at the sheriff’s office, Father Khatri is trying to convince Boyd that Sara is in touch with something or someone that can help them. We learn that Khatri’s been at The Town for three years while Sara has only been there a few months and therefore couldn’t have known about the buried candy bar. Khatri tells Boyd he’s ok with Boyd’s desire to put her in “the box” if they can just see what she knows first. Boyd reluctantly agrees. Khatri suggests that they go with Boyd into the forest so that they can use Sara’s psychic abilities to their advantage.
Back at Jim’s place, Tabitha has dug a giant hole in the basement. She’s still looking for a source to the electricity, right? Jim massages her tender shoulders and it looks like they’re about to fuck in the hole. At least someone’s getting some action.
And we’re back upstairs at the Colony House, Kevin slumped against the wall, mangled and dead. Jasmine is washing her bloody hands. Why is the monster washing her hands? Maybe she’s afraid of germs.
She opens the window and lets the rest of the monsters in. They were waiting outside. That damn vixen!
Victor is in his attic when there’s a knock on his door. It’s Julie, who just wants to be alone. Victor reluctantly lets her inside. Julie asks Victor why he dug all the graves and starts asking questions about “this place.”
Back on the sitcom side of things, Jade is downstairs getting ready to eat with Kenny and his mom. He’s looking at a notebook and notices two pages stuck together. In between the pages is a polaroid. Kenny’s mom recognizes Victor in the photo. It’s a picture of Victor as a young boy standing outside the diner.
Now it’s back to Trudy, who is talking to a pillow. She’s going to give it to Fatima. She notices a door to a bedroom is open and that someone inside is laughing. It’s Jasmine. As Trudy walks into the room to see what’s so funny, the door shuts behind her. She sees Kevin’s body on the floor and realizes she’s just made a grave mistake. I knew Trudy wasn’t going to last this entire episode.
There are three monsters in the room with Trudy. Jasmine says, “Hi Trudy,” and right before Trudy is ripped to shreds, she asks, “How do you know my name?” Jasmine says they know all of their names. Trudy dies a violent and bloody death.
The party downstairs is going strong when the monsters descend the stairs. Mayhem ensues as the monsters slow walk toward their victims. A classic horror trope.
Up in Victor’s attic, Julie hears the commotion and wants to know what’s going on. Victor says, “It’s starting” but doesn’t elaborate when Julie has questions. He’s too busy getting an escape rope out of his dresser and latching it around a wooden beam before tossing the other end out the window. Don’t question it, Julie, just go down the rope and to safety!
Donna is trying to get everyone out of Colony House and into the van to escape. Fatima runs up to her and wants to know where Ellis and Julie are. Donna doesn’t have a clue. Fatima tells Donna to get all the people into town and Donna hops into the van to help everyone escape.
Julie and Victor drop down to the ground outside. Victor sees “the boy in white” (the same boy that Ethan saw several episodes earlier) and tells Julie they must “go to the trees.” Julie is hysterical but she follows Victor into the forest.
Back inside Colony House, Ellis is slowly making his way through the house as screams are heard in the distance. One of the creepy monsters is making his way through the house. Ellis finds Trudy’s body in the bedroom and stops to look at her. There’s a monster behind him! Run, Ellis!
Ellis smashes through the window and jumps out onto the roof. He then throws himself to the ground below. He escapes the creepy monster. They sure don’t seem to be in a hurry to murder anyone.
Fatima finds Ellis and helps him up, just as other monsters are approaching. They go back inside the foyer of Colony House and Fatima closes both sets of doors just as the monsters close in. There’s a talisman on the wall, so they’re going to be safe. It seems the monsters can’t enter any room with four walls and a talisman, no matter the type of room.
Victor and Julie are running through the darkened wood. Victor tells Julie that she must go through one of the holes in the trees and to tell her brother that “it’s started.” Julie has no idea what Victor’s talking about, but Victor assures Julie that Ethan will. He pushes Julie through the tree.
The next scene opens with Julie walking out of a cabinet in a cellar. We’ve seen this cellar before but I can’t recall the scene. So, Victor’s comment in an earlier episode that the holes in the trees will send people to different locations is true.
Boyd and Father Khatri have hashed out their differences and are getting ready to go get Sara and begin their journey when they hear a car honking. It’s Donna in the van, who tells Boyd that the monsters have infiltrated Colony House. Father Khatri helps everyone inside and sees the monsters slowly walking toward them from down the street.
“Father” he hears someone call behind him, and as he turns around, an unseen monster slashes his throat. Not Father Khatri! Boyd catches him and begins firing bullets at the monster as he pulls Khatri inside the police station.
Father Khatri is bleeding badly through his throat and says, “It doesn’t end like this. My path...” Unfortunately for Father Khatri, it does. He dies in Boyd’s arms as they say a prayer together. Amen.
That’s it for this episode. While the show continues to be uneven in its character building, this particular episode ended on a strong story arc. We’re definitely getting somewhere, now, as the monsters have caused chaos and upended the good vibes at Fatima’s anniversary party.
With only three episodes left in the season, will we get answers to the bigger questions? I hope so, although it’s hard to see how the show continues into a second season if they do answer those questions. The characters just aren’t strong enough (yet), and they killed off one of the better ones in Father Khatri.
Overall, an excellent episode and I’m excited to see what’s in store for our heroes next time. See you then!
