It’s time for the season one finale of Epix’s fantastic new show, FROM. I’m as excited to review this as Jade is to get his radio tower working. Let’s get to it!
We open up the episode with Ethan, as he plays make-believe with some toys. Julie wakes up and sees him playing his game of “who wants to go home.” She feels for the kid.
Jade bursts through the door downstairs and states that he’s figured the electricity problem out. It’s about time! Apparently, none of the items that the townsfolk brought with them from the outside world will work because they require electricity, and the town’s appliances aren’t wired into anything. However, if you wire them into one of The Town’s items (like a lamp), then they will work. This means, just as Jim suggests, that they can turn Colony House into one giant electrical outlet for the radio tower. Ok, then!
Next up is Boyd and Sara, who are recovering from their night in hell out in the forest. Sara wants to know if the animals of their world know where they are. Boyd just thinks it’s a creepy place and wants out. They decide to go exploring outside their tent now that the sun is up, only to discover that the trees are covered in spider webs. Yep, time to burn it all down.
And with that, our prologue ends. We’re off to a great start. Let's hope this finale lives up to the hype!
Jade is instructing the townsfolk in how to run electricity to Colony House. They need enough cord from appliances around the town so that they can send out a transmission before nightfall. The townsfolk get to work on Jade and Jim’s orders.
As the townsfolk depart to work on their project, Julie confronts Jade. Jade’s been calling Jim “Tea Cup,” and Julie doesn’t like it. Jade doesn’t care, and the scene ends with him riding away on a bicycle. Why does Jade call Jim “Tea Cup?” Does anyone know? And why does it bother Julie so much?
In the police station, Donna is looking at the map of where everyone came from. She wants to know why they all came from different places. Kenny tells her that he’s going to help Kristi gather wire from the ambulance, and he tells Donna that he’s hopeful that their plan to broadcast a radio signal will work. Donna is skeptical. We’re going to find out.
Kenny takes a lamp over to the ambulance where Kristi is stripping it for wire. The lamp he brought with him is from his time in college. It also serves as a globe, with a secret compartment inside. Kenny has been hiding a list of places he’d like to go: Costa Rica, Hawaii, Iceland. Kristi loves his list, and Kenny offers to take her to some of these spots if their radio experiment works. Kristi, though, rejects his advances because she’s engaged in the real world. We’re already spending a lot of time with Kenny this episode. I’ve been saying for several episodes now that I don’t think Kenny makes it through this season. His “bucket list” of vacation spots doesn’t help his chances.
Over in another part of town, Tabitha and the Philosopher-Bartender are going through a shed, looking for tools. Tabitha wants to know why the Philosopher-Bartender isn’t helping out with the radio tower. He states that it’s because he’s seen a lot of ideas come and go in this town, and the people with those ideas always end up hopelessly back at his bar.
At Colony House, Ellis wants to have a conversation with Fatima, who is busy with the town preparations. But Ellis, never one to take no for an answer, insists. He takes her out back of the Colony House property so that he can reminisce about their first meeting. Fatima (and the audience) wants to know what he’s doing. Ellis says that he realizes he wants to be with Fatima forever and he drops to one knee to propose to her. Uh oh! This can’t end well for one or both of them. Fatima says yes to his proposal. But will they live long enough to consummate this marriage?
In the forest, Boyd and Sara are marching in the direction toward the bright light they saw the night before. The woods are covered in giant spider webs, but that doesn’t deter Boyd from searching for whoever, or whatever, was shining that light.
Sara is skeptical that they’re heading toward salvation. Sara reminds Boyd that the voice she heard last night (she presumes it was Boyd’s dead wife, Abby) was sending them a warning. The voice told them to go back. But before Boyd and Sara can resolve their difference of opinion on what to do, they hear a voice calling to them from a spider web wrapped tree.
It’s Abby, and she’s also wrapped in a web. She isn’t there for a reunion, though, and reaches out to grab Boyd as she screams at him. Boyd runs off, but it’s too late. Spiders come crawling out of the web and begin to bite him all over. Sara brushes them off of Boyd and then asks him what he saw. He says that he saw nothing, wishing to forget the image of Abby. If I were Boyd, I’d be checking my pants for more of those creepy spiders!
At Colony House, Jim and the gang are finalizing their radio tower plans. It sure is taking them a long time to get this thing off the (literal) ground. I’m dubious this is going to work, or that they’re going to get it working before this episode ends. I smell a cliffhanger (or two). Julie is still upset over Jade’s “Tea Cup” nickname for Jim, but I’m not sure why. Ethan remarks that he bets Victor is off doing his part for the quest. Ethan imagines it’s an important part, just like building the tower is important for the townsfolk.
In the forest, Boyd is struggling with the spider venom and also with the vision of Abby. He’s having a mental and physical break down, and Sara is desperate to help him. Boyd, exhausted, takes a seat on the trail. Boyd is losing hope, and Sara needs to get him moving again if they ever want to make it out of there. Thunder rumbles in the distance.
We’re really moving now over at the Colony House, as the townsfolk hoist the makeshift tower onto the roof. Jade decides this is the perfect time to go get his rolling papers from his bedroom over at Kenny’s house. Never too late to get stoned, I guess.
Jade walks into the home he shares with Kenny and his mom. She’s meditating, and Jade takes this opportunity to get to know her by telling a story of how his grandmother died when he was only twelve. He didn’t want to be alone, and he doesn’t want to be alone now. This has something to do with Kenny, but the meaning is somewhat lost. To me, it’s farther proof that Kenny is not surviving this show. But we’ll see.
Back at the Colony House, Jim is showing Ethan how the radio tower is going to work. Jade shows up, Kenny’s mom in tow, with snacks and it looks like everyone is ready to get the radio tower up and running. I’m getting nervous!
Kenny and Kristi have an awkward conversation in the kitchen of the Colony House, as Kenny is still smarting from her rejection. He’s trying to be mature about the rejection, but Kristi is now having second doubts and leaves the door open to their possible romance (assuming they get out of the town). She just can’t know whether her fiancé is waiting for her on the other side, so she’s giving Kenny a chance. This spells doom for one or both of them.
The townsfolk are ready with the radio tower, now, and as they lift it onto the roof, the people rejoice. We’re getting lots of hugs and uplifting music as the countdown begins. They turn on the lights inside Colony House and they have power to the tower. More rejoicing. Oh, this can’t be good!
Tabitha tells Jim that she has to go, now, to get ready for Plan B. She means more digging in the basement. Jim doesn’t seem concerned about Plan B, as they’ve got a signal from the radio. And speaking of signals, storm clouds are building out in the forest.
Boyd and Sara need to find shelter in the woods as the storm is getting closer. Boyd needs to rest, though, as the spider venom is taking its toll. They hear that same fog horn from the night before over the horizon, and they begin to climb the hill as the rain comes down in sheets.
Once on top of the hill, they see an old light house in the distance. That’s where both the horn and the light are coming from. Who, or what, is in the light house?
Back at the Colony House, Jim is calling for Mayday over the radio. The storm is coming in quickly and they don’t have much time to get that radio off the roof before the wind blows it down. Just before they decide to call it quits for the night, a voice comes through the radio. They’ve made contact!
The male voice on the other end, though, recognizes Jim, which should be impossible. How does he know it’s Jim Matthews that he’s talking to? The voice tells Jim that his wife shouldn’t be digging the hole (her Plan B). Stunned, Jim takes off to go and warn Tabitha that something isn’t right. Suddenly, the lights in Colony House begin to explode.
Tabitha, busy digging her hole in the basement of her house, stops because a crack has opened up. She falls through the crack in the basement floor and lands in darkness. A flashlight pierces the pitch black. It’s Victor! He says, “You’re here. He said that you would come.” He’s talking about The Boy in White, who told Victor that he should wait for her.
Victor tells Tabitha that they have to hurry because they are “were they sleep.” He’s talking about the monsters. Yes, you better get out of there! He shows Tabitha drawings on the walls. He says that the monsters make drawings too. The drawings are rudimentary chalk drawings. They run through the underground maze as the scene cuts back to Jim, who is arriving at the basement just as Tabitha and Victor disappear into the dark.
Back in the forest, Boyd can’t go on. He instructs Sara to go without him, because if she doesn’t, they’ll both die. We see The Boy in White, who tells Sara that this place is “angry” and that they have to get somewhere safe. We don’t know who The Boy in White is, but he seems to have good intentions. He points toward a hollow tree and tells Sara to get inside.
Sara helps Boyd get inside the tree and tells him that she’ll be right behind him. However, when Boyd gets inside, he finds himself stuck inside a confined space. It looks like a deep well. Did The Boy in White lie to them? We know that these hollow trees can land people anywhere in the town, but what if The Boy in White knew that Boyd would get stuck if he climbed inside this one? Boyd is screaming for help, but no help is coming. Did Sara follow him through the tree and end up somewhere else? Or is she still in the forest and climbing toward the light house?
Over in The Diner, the juke box begins playing as a tour bus pulls up. We can’t see who is inside. Why now? Does it have anything to do with the townsfolk attempting to escape? Is it coincidence? How many people are inside the bus?
The episode ends, and we’re left with nothing but cliff hangers! Oh, I was hoping for at least a few more answers before the season ended. Still, it was a great season and a great finale. I just hope that the show doesn’t string us a long for another season without answering some of the bigger questions. This season was a solid A-.
There are questions and concerns about whether Epix will cancel FROM before we get a season 2. I surely hope not, as FROM is my favorite show to come along in quite a while. It’s also got a great set up for a second season, and I’m excited to see where the story goes!
Until next time!
